I just read I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell by Tucker Max because my two female roommates recommended it. (They thought it was great.) Though this collection of short stories detailing Tucker’s crazy life of constant drinking and casual sex was hilarious, I was really struck by how he portrayed the female characters, mostly as bimbos or sluts. (His book apparently paved the way for a new genre called “fratire” which include male-centered themes and political incorrectness.)
While I was reading the book I acknowledged the derogatory portrayal of the women characters but I was not really bothered by it because they were doing things that made me agree that they did not deserve respect. I kind of put it in the same category as the rap songs that having lyrics that degrade women – I’m not acting like those kinds of women, they are not talking about me, so it’s OK. But it’s not OK, and all of these things are obviously a huge setback for females in general.
I'm proposing the term "boychik lit" to refer to a someone kinder alternative, centered on the heterosexual male who apppreciates, but still cannot hope to understand, women.
